'Unprecedented change' in data centres

22 Sep 2008

Data centres are currently undergoing "unprecedented change" due to emerging technologies and changing methods of allocating budgets, it has been claimed.

Research from market analyst IDC indicates that developments within the industry are placing renewed demand on data centre networks to be flexible and accommodating to new equipment.

Lucinda Borovick, research vice-president for data centre networks, says: "The data centre is in the midst of unprecedented change driven by a combination of factors all converging to make the data centre a real-time responsive resource for organizations."

As a result, IDC is anticipating continued growth in investment among businesses into data centre networks, with compound annual acceleration of six per cent predicted for the years leading to 2012.

The news corresponds with recent research from the firm which found continued growth in demand for networked storage devices across Europe, the Middle East and Africa over the past year.

In the second quarter of 2008, the analyst notes that sales had increased by 20.3 per cent year-on-year in dollar terms, or 3.7 per cent if measured in the more stable currency of euros.
