HDS: Geothermal to power data centres

Storage vendor Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) has a goal to establish Iceland as a data centre capital, providing enterprises with the opportunity to house information in secure facilities, a report has claimed.
Using the country's geothermal energy to power the operation, HDS is formulating a plan with Iceland data centre deliverers Data Islandia to highlight the nation as one with access to zero-carbon energy, despite a current economic downturn, Business Green reports.
Indeed, HDS is convinced that such a financial crisis will not dent the potential of Iceland becoming a leader in energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly data centre operations.
Speaking to the resource, Alec Selvon-Bruce, who manages eco-solutions at HDS, says that next year will mark that start of work on the technical specifications for the new facility.
Furthermore, HDS being involved with the scheme gave a " major vote of confidence" to the country's potential, he adds.
Writing on his blog, HDS' vice-president and chief technology officer Hu Yoshida says that the firm provides "non-disruptive data mobility, the ability to copy, move, migrate and replicate volumes" to increase the utility of storage space.
