Green IT metrics for energy standards
14 Nov 2008
A new package of standardised metrics is hoped to be in place by 2009 by the Greed Grid, an organisation of IT firms searching for ways to boost the energy efficiency of data centres, it has been reported.
The standards are expected to also include storage systems and networking equipment, while the global consortium recently announced an end user Advisory Council to guide the Green Grid on how businesses are embracing the data centre benchmarks.
Speaking to the technology forum, director of the group Jim Pappas says: "Having these new metrics will ensure that the companies that do innovate on energy efficiency are rewarded. We really do have a who's who of IT vendors signed up and they are behind this initiative."
Once the measurements are in place, IT firms can then develop products to monitor the power use of appliances and optimise the data centre in order to make sure that it is working at top efficiency.
It was previously discovered by Hitachi Data Systems that 83 per cent of people questioned believed that green measures save money.
