Compression 'is logical data reduction step'

17 Nov 2008

The vice-president of marketing at Storwize has stated that real-time compression of primary data allows for information on a file system to be compressed and decompressed without an impact on performance.

Speaking to technology resource Processor, Peter Smails said that such storage technology is the "logical first step in data reduction" on networks between the file data served and the users.

Furthermore, compression "sets up data de-duplication", he adds, while the resource notes that these two technologies complement each other as while de-duplication works on sets of redundant data multiple times, compression works on data at one time.

Moreover, it is the amount of data retained, rather than the active data set currently in use that has led to the unprecedented growth in storage, it continues.

In related news, CIOL claims that data de-duplication can aid comprehensive disaster recovery as disk space can be used more efficiently, leading to improved recovery times.
