LSI 'enables next-gen media gateways'
21 Nov 2008
A portfolio of voice and audio codecs has been announced by LSI to enable the coding and decoding of real-time multimedia communications.
Installed in intelligent network devices, the codecs enable manufacturers to build high-density and cost-effective platforms to support advanced video and voice services within a variety of network environments, the vendor states.
Meanwhile, applications which demand next-generation wireless can be served by the combination of codecs and processors, which are optimised to run on the LSI StarPro family of media processors.
Commenting on the news, Charlie Kawwas, vice-president of marketing of the Networking Components Group at LSI, says that because of market pressure for higher quality codecs, "the performance and power efficiency of the StarPro media processors become increasingly critical to building cost-effective, high-density media gateways for wireless, wireline, broadband and enterprise applications".
LSI recently announced that it was to work with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in a bid to boost the development of next-generation Linux clusters.
