DISUK - Paranoia2
The Paranoia2 is the first product of the second generation family of the products in the range. It has a SCSI interface for both host and tape drive available as either LVD or HVD types.

The most dramatic change between the original Paranoia range and the new Paranoia2 series has been the addition of pre-compression before encryption. This feature enables the unit to maintain or often exceed the transfer rates achieved prior to installation, even when writing or reading in dual interlaced 3DES mode!
Applications
- Securing data on a tape Library shared between different users, applications and business units
- Securing data sent to off-site tape vault
- Internal privacy of in house sensitive data
- Secure inter site tape transport
Features
- Transparent to user and operating system
- Platform independent
- On the fly tape encryption
- Up to 75 MB/sec sustained encryption rate
- Unique interlaced dual-DES and dual-DES3 modes
- Dual key user entry plus hardware key
- LVD, S/E or HVD wide SCSI interfaces
- Built in monitor
- GUI configuration software
- LCD Status information
- Desk top or rack mount
Outline
The Paranoia2 provides on the fly data encryption or decryption to the 3DES standards via a two-part key. The first of these is via a unique secure silicon chip installed when the unit is manufactured, the other is a firmware key that is decided and installed by the end user. Both parts of this unique key must be present for the encryption / decryption to take place.
How does it Work?
The Paranoia2 consists of two separate elements in one unit.
The main element is the encryption section and sits on the SCSI bus between the host computer and the backup tape device. When properly installed, it takes on the SCSI ID of the target tape drive and presents this ID to the host computer. Paranoia passes through all inquiry information and therefore appears transparent to the host computer. At the heart of the encryption section lies a dedicated hardware encryption and decryption engine which, depending on the level of security required, allows data to pass through the encryption engines, one or three times depending on the level of security (DES or 3 DES).
The second section is a system monitor, which provides information relating to the climatic environment of the complete Paranoia system as well as monitoring the power supplies and other critical functions not directly involved in the encryption process.
